Political Positioning:

2012 grad ‘pulls the strings’ for local election campaigns
Paul Hageman describes advantages of the political science degree program at Huntington University, a Christian college.

“As the years have gone by, I’ve gotten closer to my professors than I thought was ever possible at the collegiate level. I definitely have learned a lot from Huntington and my classes.”

The country is at the height of its political season, and Paul Hageman is behind the scenes making it all happen.

Hageman will be a 2012 graduate of the political science program at Huntington University. But even before he had set his sights on his diploma, he was helping others to hedge their way into office.

“I have a real heart for politics, especially local politics,” said Hageman, who helped handle four campaigns for county office in 2011. “When you’re working with local politics, you are selling their message. … (At the local level), I see my work firsthand.”

Capitalizing on the success of the “Take Back Our Four” campaign to earn seats for four Republican Party members on the county commission in Kent County, Mich., Hageman is returning to Michigan in December to continue his work.

“I had no clue what I was doing when I started, but (the success of) winning a campaign the first time around was because of the people around me,” he said. Hageman said that connections were everything in landing this job, and when the time came, he had positioned himself as the right candidate.

“You really have to network and get your name out there,” he said. But it was also the preparation he received from his professors at HU that made this position possible.

“As the years have gone by, I’ve gotten closer to my professors than I thought was ever possible at the collegiate level,” Hageman said. “I definitely have learned a lot from Huntington and my classes.”

With graduation in May, Hageman plans to earn his few additional credits needed to graduate while working for the Michigan campaigns.

As for plans after graduation? He still has political aspirations, just none that include his name on the ticket.

“I like staying behind the scenes and pulling the strings,” he said.
