Communication Department to host visit day

FOR RELEASE

Huntington, Ind.—Huntington University’s Department of Communication involves several different areas of study. On March 8, the department will host its spring visit day to acquaint prospective students and their parents with each program and its professors.

“We hope to give visitors a chance to see the professors as the professionals that they are as well as their personal sides,” said Dr. Lance Clark, associate professor of communication and department chair.

The Department of Communication at HU features Bryan Ballinger, assistant professor of digital media arts, who was the head of 3D design at Big Idea (responsible for “Veggie tales”); Clark, who recently returned from filming a documentary in Ghana with Nicole C. Mullen; the former layout supervisor at Big Idea, J. Stephan Leeper; former assistant editor of Christianity Today, Dr. Kevin Miller; and Dr. Mike Rowley, who is currently involved in a national research project on teenagers and the ethical dilemma of pirating music.

Events for the day will include touring the campus, attending a chapel service, eating lunch with faculty and current students of the Department of Communication and participating in classes and activities specific to the visitor’s interests.

In the afternoon, students will break off into discussions on their desired majors. Public relations students will meet with the staff of the HU Office of Public Relations. Journalism students will spend time with Miller to write a hard news story in the newspaper office. Students interested in broadcasting and film will spend time inside the studio in front of a camera, and animation students will spend time viewing the work of current students and the professors.

“This is more than just a visit,” said Clark. “It’s emersion.”

Any high school sophomore, junior or senior wishing to pursue a future in communication studies, film studies, digital media arts, journalism, public relations or radio and television broadcasting is encouraged to attend.

“We’re specifically looking for students interested in an education that gives a liberal arts perspective, faith and learning integrations, and individualized instruction from professors who have worked professionally in their individual area of interest,” said Dr. Miller, associate professor of communication.

The university has seen a dramatic increase in scheduled visits for the current year. With approximately 300 more visits this year compared to last, the Admissions Department encourages prospective students to attend one of several group visit days.

“The biggest advantage of the group visit is getting to see what kinds of other students have the same interests as you,” said Miller. “Meeting with others and the whole faculty allows a deeper understanding of the program.”

Although visitors will participate in the visitation day as a group, there will be time for individual meetings with the professors. Admissions counselors will wrap up the visit by discussing the admissions process and financial aid with the students and their parents.

If you would like to attend Huntington’s communication visitation day, it is necessary to RSVP no later than March 6.
