Huntington senior wins third place in regional art show

Huntington, Ind.—Huntington University senior Daron P. Short earned a third place award for a digital photograph titled “Storm Clouds” in the Northeast Indiana College Student Exhibition.

Short is a graphic design major from Whiteland, Ind.

A juried art exhibition held at the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Visual Arts Gallery, the show features the work of the students from IPFW, Grace College, Manchester College, Huntington University and Ivy Tech Community College.

Altogether, 108 pieces of artwork were submitted by 41 students.

Five were students from Huntington University. Daron Short, Greg Wardwell and Joshua Watson are presenting their photographic works. Justin Wentz is presenting a charcoal drawing, and Trista Watson is presenting a clay vessel.

Forty-three pieces were chosen for exhibition. The event is designed to showcase talent, build résumés, network students from Northeast Indiana campuses, and allow for the sharing of artistic ideas and inspiration. There were six cash awards, ranging from $50-$250, given to the artists and chosen by the juror for the exhibition, Brian Byrn.

Byrn is the director of the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Ind., and is a respected curator and lecturer whose work has been exhibited widely. The MMAA is known for its extensive collection of 20th century American art including works by Maria Martinez, Louise Nevelson and Grant Wood.

The exhibition will be held until March 2 at the IPFW Visual Arts Gallery. Admission is free. The exhibition may be viewed daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information call the Department of Fine Arts at (260) 481-6705.
