The Trojans of Taylor University (7-3, 1-2) handed the #23-ranked HU men's basketball
team (10-2, 1-1) their first MCC loss of the season with a 76-69 win over the Foresters on Saturday afternoon at the Merillat Complex.
It was a solid first half showing for the Trojans as they led the entire twenty minutes. They jumped out to a 20-6 lead behind Drew Tower's 12 points, all of which came from behind the arc. The Foresters relied on their big men off the bench as Bobby Jolliff and Seth Kisler finished the half with seven points each. Taylor shot 46.9 percent (15-for-32) from the field and committed no turnovers as they took a 37-27 lead into intermission.
After a few defensive changes, the Foresters came out of the locker room with new life as they outscored the Trojans 22-11 behind 12 points from Kellen Zawadzki to take their first lead of the contest 49-48 at the 11:45 mark. With the score knotted 57-57 with just under five minutes left, the Trojans went on a 15-8 run to take a comfortable 72-65 lead with 33 ticks left on the clock. HU knocked down two freebies on the next possession to cut it to five but the Trojans denied the Foresters any hope of a come-from-behind win by hitting free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Zawadzki led all scorers with 26 points, six rebounds and five assists. Tyler Shively was the only other Forester in double digits with 11. Taylor was led by Jake Burkholder's 23 points and 12 rebounds. Casey Coons chipped in 18 points and Tower finished with 15 points.
The Foresters hit the hardwood again on Saturday when they host Shawnee State at 3:00 p.m.
