ERC helps student confirm business career

Aleksandra Spasic

“I would encourage students to take this amazing opportunity and go to the ERC any time. They are very knowledgeable, and they can always find you something that fits you and your personality."

A J-term internship with Edward Jones Investments left Aleksandra Spasic, a senior from Vranje, Serbia, wanting a second chance. After her positive experience in January, the economics and finance major, returned to the company for a summer-long internship.

Her experience in January was more restricted to specific tasks that she was given such as portfolio analysis and investing. However, her tasks for her summer internship gave her more of a feeling of a full-time job.

"During the summer I worked on everything they gave me. I was contacting clients and asking about life insurance policies. I did a lot of asset allocation and risk-tolerance analysis and even worked some with the marketing side of the company to bring new prospects," she said.

Her extended summer work gave her more insight into the everyday work routine for someone in this field.

The classroom experience Spasic at HU helped her through this internship, especially in helping her carry her weight in the company.

She said she gained valuable lessons that will help her as she launches into her own career in business upon graduation in May.

"I learned how to manage my time more efficiently and how to communicate with my co-workers,” she said. “I also gained confidence in talking to people on the phone and in person."

Looking back on her time, she realizes that this experienced confirmed her choice to choose business as a career.

"This internship has proven that I didn't make a bad choice when I decided to pursue a diploma in business. This field is very interesting, and I began to realize just how much I like it," she said.

This internship also helped Spasic see the next step that she wants to take in furthering her knowledge in the business world.

"I would like to experience finance in a bigger manufacturing producing company, so my next step is looking for an internship with a CFO of a company like that," she said. "I think that will really help me figure out the route that I want to take in my career in the future."

And it was all made possible because of the Enterprise Resource Center.

“I would encourage students to take this amazing opportunity and go to the ERC any time,” she said. “They are very knowledgeable, and they can always find you something that fits you and your personality."
