Piano Master Class open to public February 6

Huntington, Ind.— Area pianists and the public are cordially invited to a Piano Master Class conducted by Dr. Paul Barnes, co-chair of piano at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music and artist-teacher at the Bösendorfer International Piano Academy in Vienna, Austria. The Master Class is free and will take place Thursday, February 6, 2003, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Merillat Centre for the Arts Longaker Recital Hall at Huntington College.

At the Master Class, several Huntington College piano students will be critiqued and coached in pieces ranging from the Baroque era through the Twentieth Century. During his visit to Huntington College, Dr. Barnes will also give a Symposium Lecture on the subject of Arts in Theology on February 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the MCA Auditorium, followed by a Convocation Panel Discussion on Friday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. The final event of the series will feature Dr. Barnes in a recital of piano works by Bach, Liszt, Arvo Pärt, Victoria Bond, and Philip Glass in the Longaker Recital Hall on February 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Reflecting his passionate interest in ancient chant and liturgy, Barnes also serves as head chanter at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Lincoln, Nebraska. His eclectic interests have taken him from monasteries in the Judean desert to the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Exploring both minimalism and religious symbolism in music, Barnes has been featured three times on NPR’s Performance Today and has recently performed in Jerusalem, Moscow, Greece, Seoul, Vienna, Budapest and throughout the U.S. A champion of many of today’s important composers, Dr. Barnes has given world premier performances of works by Philip Glass, Victoria Bond, and Jeffrey Hass.
