Joel Childs enters his second year as the Huntington University head coach of the men’s and women’s track and field program. No stranger to campus, Childs spent four years under Coach Tom King as an assistant coach for both the cross country and track and field programs from 2009-2013.

During his time as a Forester assistant coach, the cross country program won two conference titles, had 14 all-conference runners, and two individuals and two teams qualify for NAIA Nationals. The Huntington track team had 16 NAIA national qualifiers and ten all-conference honorees.

Prior to his return to HU, Childs spent three years as the head cross country and track and field coach at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky.

During his three-year stint, he coached 24 conference champions, over 50 all-conference finishers and four NAIA national qualifiers which included the school’s first female qualifier two NAIA All-America honorees. His athletes also set 54 school records.

In his final track season at Union, Childs was voted the 2016 Appalachian Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading the men's program to a second place finish and the women’s program to a first place finish in their conference meet after both finished last the year before he took over the reins in 2013.

In his first year as the HU skipper, Childs already boasts two All-Americans and three All-Conference honorees.

Childs holds a USATF Level 2 sprints, hurdles, relays and combined events certification in addition to being certified as a USTFCCCA jumps specialist.

A 2008 graduate of Anderson University, Childs earned a BS in Information Systems. As a four-year member of the track and cross country teams, he helped lead the Ravens to seven conference titles and two NCAA Division III cross country national tournament appearances. Childs and his wife Brittany reside in Huntington, Ind.
