Dr. Schmalzried joined the HU faculty in 2011 and was a professor in the education department until 2015. She accepted a full-time position elsehwere, but will remain an adjunct instructor at HU.
For the last 10 years, she has been the Director of Special Education for the Wabash Miami Area Program for Exceptional Children, a four-school corporation special education cooperative. Prior to that, she was a full time assistant professor at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind. She also taught for many years in multiple areas of special education in both Huntington and Whitley counties. She received her bachelor’s Degree from St. Francis College and her master’s degree from Ball State University. In December 2010, she completed her doctoral degree at Ball State University in both special education and educational leadership. Within her degrees, she is licensed to teach students with learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, mild cognitive disabilities, moderate cognitive disabilities and severe disabilities. She also holds an administrative license as a director of exceptional needs.Her husband, Lee, is a building contractor in Huntington and surrounding counties. They both are lifetime residents of Huntington County. They have one son who is a senior at Purdue University majoring in wildlife. They enjoy the outdoors, music and traveling together.
