Head Volleyball Coach
(260) 359-4216

Head coach Kyle Shondell heads into his 3rd year at the helm of the Forester volleyball program. Shondell has wasted little time rewriting the record books by guiding his team to 13 wins each season over the last two years, the most wins in program history since 2009.

In his first year, Shondell's crew also recorded the most league wins in program history with eight and claimed the highest regular season conference finish since 2007. Additionally, the Foresters snapped several losing-streaks which included beating Taylor for the first time since 2005, upending Marian for the first time since 2007 and getting the best of Grace and Bethel for the first time since 2009 and 2011 respectively.

In 2015, Shondell’s squad also made their first league tournament appearance since 2009 where they won their opening match – a feat that hadn’t been done since 2007. The Foresters capped off Shondell's first year by landing in the national rankings, finishing 16th in the NAIA in blocks per set (2.350) and 26th in digs per set (17.140).

In his first two seasons at HU, Shondell's athletes have earned 12 All-Conference honors and three NAIA Scholar Athlete accolades.

To go along with Shondell’s success at Huntington, he also brings a history of well-documented experience to the position. In addition to serving as the first assistant at Western Illinois University and Chicago State University, Shondell has a year of head coaching experience at Rock Valley College where his team finished the 2013 season 21-19 and ranked #8 in the final NJCAA Division III poll. The Golden Eagles finished 8-3 in league play to finish second in the North Central Conference that year.

Shondell comes from a strong bloodline of volleyball success. His grandfather, Don Shondell, is often credited with introducing volleyball to the Midwest. He started Ball State's men's and women’s volleyball programs, was the co-founder of the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) and has logged the second highest number of wins in NCAA men's volleyball history.

The HU general was also privy to growing up around the Munciana Volleyball Club, one of country’s top club programs, and had the opportunity to spend his collegiate years working under his accomplished father Dave, the Purdue University head volleyball coach since 2003, as the team’s senior manager.

Shondell graduated from Purdue University in 2012 with a BA in professional writing and minor in history. He, his wife LeeAnn and dog Samson reside in Fort Wayne, Ind.
