Dr. Sara Best joined the faculty in 2015 with a teaching focus on pediatric occupational therapy. Dr. Best has seven years’ experience in early childhood education and early intervention, working with children ages birth-5 years. During this time, Dr. Best completed course work and workshops related to childhood development, sensory integration, environmental modification, and work with families, and served as director of an early childhood program for children 6 months to 10 years old. Dr. Best has six years’ experience as a practicing occupational therapist, having worked in acute care, skilled nursing, pediatric outpatient, adult outpatient, and pediatric home health as a traveling therapist. In June 2016, Dr. Best took over the position of Academic Fieldwork Coordinator of the OTD program, overseeing clinical placements for Level I and Level II fieldwork for all students. Her experience as a traveling therapist allows her to advise students who may not have much experience with traveling to best prepare for their experience.
Since joining the OTD faculty, Dr. Best has earned certification as an Autism Specialist, has attended AOTA’s Specialty Conference on Autism, and has presented at AOTA’s national conference on emotional regulation and caregiver bonding in children. Dr. Best collaborated with other faculty on an article pertaining to patient simulations in the classroom, which was published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Dr. Best loves to travel, and likes to take long road trips with her dog, who is a wonderful companion if a terrible navigator. Dr. Best enjoys hiking, swimming, kayaking, dancing, reading, crafting, yoga, and is determined to enjoy cooking.
