GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Forester men’s tennis squad was one of 14 teams to compete in the ITA Regionals hosted by Davenport University (MI) over the weekend. The competition, which included seven other Crossroads League teams and six WHAC teams, featured five nationally ranked teams and some of the best talent in the Midwest.

Individual highlight performances came from a batch of HU newcomers. Freshmen Dawid Baranowski and Luke Buttermore teamed up to win the Men’s B Doubles draw with a convincing 8-1 win over a tough doubles duo from Indiana Tech. In their three doubles matches, the pair only gave up a total of five games on their way to becoming the B Doubles champs.

Two other rookies in Tim Sprunger and Brody Worl battled to an 8-6 win over a tandem from Taylor University to win the Men’s B Doubles Consolation draw. Worl was also victorious in the Men’s B Singles Consolation draw. Still in contention on Saturday, he defeated his teammate Sprunger 8-3 in the semi-finals and then went on to knock out Taylor University’s Hunter Jewett 8-2 in the finals to claim his crown.

Other notable wins during the weekend came from Ignacio Poncio. Poncio came up one match short of advancing to the Elite 8 in the main draw of singles action. The Argentina native defeated Juan Miguel Cuidad (Goshen) 6-2, 4-6, (10-7) in the opening round as well as Javier Alvarez (Lawrence Tech) 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the Round of 32 before falling to UNOH’s Gjorgji Popovski 0-6, 4-6 in the Round of 16 to narrowly miss advancing to the quarterfinals.

Baranowski was also victorious in his first round singles match where he defeated Rui Lima (Indiana Tech) 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 64 before falling to the tournament runner-up, Theo Baudin (UNOH) 3-6, 1-6. HU’s Rodrigo Manzo was another first round singles winner in the main draw by defeating Ian Deiters (Marian) 6-4, 6-2. Manzo was defeated in the Round of 32 by tournament champion Danila Kurkulin (Grace) 2-6, 1-6.
