FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Huntington bowling team competed in the McKendree Baker Challenge, a 40 baker game tournament that then cut to the top eight teams, with both squads coming up just short of making the cut to match play.

“The results were not exactly what we were hoping for, but this tournament was a great experience us,” said Coach Mike Shockey. “The strength of this field was outstanding with nearly half of the field for women and men were all ranked in the top 30 in the country.

“As we continue to prepare for post-season play, we’re going to be able to use our experiences and lessons learned this weekend to help get ready for the NAIA Invitational Tournament.”

The HU women finished 10th out of 17 teams with a total score of 6,947 for a 173.6 average - just 171 pins short of making match play. Despite the disappointing finish, Coach Shockey was pleased with his team’s play. “The ladies showed improvement in communication on the lanes this weekend which is critical on such a demanding lane pattern. We did a good job of playing the shot and adjusting as it changed, but we struggled with consistency and spares.”

The Forester men accumulated 7,582 total pins (189.5 average/game) to claim 9th out of 18 teams. Like the women’s team, the HU men just missed match play as 159 pins separated them from 8th place.
It was a two-day rollercoaster. Saturday was one of their best overall performances of the year as they sat in 7th heading into Sunday which proved to be a tough day for the Foresters.

They fell to 11th place with four games remaining before scratching and clawing their way back to 9th by the day’s end.

Huntington is on the road this weekend to compete in the Backhaul Direct Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis.

The Huntington University Foresters compete in 17 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 38 NAIA All-America honors and 274 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations.
