Brown awarded 2017 Johnston history prize

On February 6, the Huntington University History & Political Science Department presented the 2017 S. G. Whittle Johnston Memorial Award in History to senior student Mr. Thomas Brown.

The S. G. Whittle Johnston Memorial Award in History was established by a Huntington University history alumni. The award was set up to honor the memory of this alum’s graduate school mentor. By funding this award, the donor wishes to encourage upper level history students in their undergraduate study of history. The award goes to a junior or senior history major who submits the most outstanding work of original scholarship. Each year the recipient receives a plaque and a cash award.

The Muncie, Indiana, native is a triple major in History, Biblical Studies, and International & Development Studies. Brown hopes to pursue graduate study in Southeast Asian Studies. Brown’s winning entry was titled: “The Jewel in the Crown: An Annales School Analysis of India.”

“Thomas has produced an exemplary and highly sophisticated Annales School analysis of Indian history on the eve of independence from British colonial rule. In doing, so he has engaged in a highly felicitous interpretation of one of the British Empire’s most controversial episodes of decolonization,” stated Dr. Tim Smith, Professor of Non-Western History.

Huntington University’s history and political science department offers a broad program of study that is research-led and taught by professors who are dedicated to their students. Students develop abilities in literary and oral communication, argument analysis, teamwork, independent research, and presentation skills that equip them for careers in law, political science, not-for-profit sectors, business, media, and government.
