Burks to give junior recital on Feb. 28

HUNTINGTON, Ind. The Huntington University Music Department will present a junior recital by tenor Ja'Shon Burks at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Longaker Recital Hall in the Merillat Centre for the Arts on campus. A native of Indianapolis, Burks is a music choral education and Bible and religion-religious studies major at HU.
The recital is free and open to the public.
He
attended Ben Davis High School where he was a member of the top show
choir and top concert choir for four years. During his senior year, he
was named as outstanding performer in a show four times. He also served
as keyboardist/synthesizer player for the women's show choir. While at
Ben Davis, he performed in the musical "Aida" as Chief Minister Zoser
and "Footloose" as Reverend Shaw.
This past fall, he portrayed
Caleb in HU's production of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." He also
participated in "Once Upon a Mattress" as a chorus member.
At the
age of 7, Burks directed his first gospel choir song at Mt. Olive
Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis and has continued to direct
gospel choirs for 12 years, including the HU gospel choir. In the Spring
of 2012 and 2013, he was selected to perform in the Annual Longaker
Honors Recital for the Huntington University Music Department.
