Communication students honored at iNRB awards

Huntington, Ind. "Huntington University communication students recently earned top honors at the Intercollegiate National Religious Broadcasters student awards. Huntington placed in five of the 11 categories, including three first place awards and two third place awards. First place winners in each category received a $150 cash prize along with an expenses paid trip to this year's iNRB national convention in Dallas, Texas. I am so proud of our broadcasting and film studies students, said Dr. Lance Clark, associate professor of communication. This year's iNRB competition was extremely challenging with a record number of colleges and universities entering.
I am probably most impressed with the fact that the film 'Love is a Four Letter Word' not only took first place in the field category, it also took 'top video production' for all the video entries, Clark added. It's a huge honor and really reflects the effort we place on excellence and quality of our work within the Department of Communication.
Huntington's first-place finishers included Adam Baird, a senior broadcasting major from Auburn, Ind., in TV Field Production for the film Love is a Four Letter Word ; Todd Stapleton, a junior broadcasting major from Addison, Ill., and Anca Thompson, a senior broadcasting major from Fort Wayne, Ind., for TV Studio Production with HTV News ; and Chris Metcalf, a junior broadcasting and film studies major from Mansfield, Ohio, for Web Site Content and Design on www.htvnews.net.
Huntington students who took third place honors included Julie Clawson, a sophomore broadcasting major from Pittsfield, Mich.; Thomas Brodbeck, a junior broadcasting major from Springfield, Ohio; and Laura Smitley, a sophomore broadcasting major from Leo, Ind., for their radio drama, He Walks With Me, and Chris Metcalf for the music video Good Thing.
Adam Baird entered the winning film Love is a Four Letter Word. He worked on the project last spring in Digital Film Aesthetics with 2005 Huntington University graduates Erica Nazarenus of Fishers, Ind.; Nate Pratt of Valparaiso, Ind.; Jeff Ott of Batavia, Ill.; and Dave Wynegar of South Bend, Ind. It was Baird's first entry into the iNRB awards.
I was definitely excited to learn that this film had done so well, Baird said. I worked with a really awesome group of people, and when we finished I think we all came away feeling like we had created something that was very high quality. To see this thing that we so much effort into be affirmed in this manner is very satisfying.
Chris Metcalf created the first-place winning HTV Web site last semester to increase public access to Huntington's weekly news show.
I designed the HTV website as an avenue to make our weekly news show more accessible to not only the Huntington University community, but also to people off-campus, said Metcalf, who also co-anchored the winning HTV News program in the TV Studio Production category. It is now possible for anyone in the world to watch our show, which is great for parents, friends, prospective students, and many others.
