Doughty named interim dean at Huntington University

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Dr. Del Doughty, longtime professor of English at Huntington University, has been named the interim senior vice president for academic affairs, effective June 1. In this role, Doughty will be responsible for leading the faculty and developing new academic programs, including an innovative bachelor's degree program in heuristics, design, and technology that will be launched this fall. This program aims to develop key cognitive skills for students entering the 21st century workforce.
"Huntington University has always been a great place for students to learn, and I hope to maintain that as we navigate a tricky time in higher education," Doughty said. "I hope to engage the faculty on crucial issues like cost, rigor and student satisfaction."
Doughty will continue in this interim role through May 31, 2013. Beginning this fall, the university will launch a national search for this position. Doughty succeeds Dr. Norris Friesen who will assume the role of professor of German and director of cross-cultural programs beginning in the 2012-13 school year.
"Dr. Del Doughty has a strong commitment to students as well as a commitment to excellence in higher education," said President G. Blair Dowden. "I believe that he will be a great asset to the university in this transitional time."
Doughty joined the university faculty in 1996. He currently serves as professor of English, chair of the Division of Humane Studies and the self-study coordinator for reaccreditation. He teaches courses in creative writing and world literature and has published short collections of poetry. He earned his Ph.D. in comparative literature from Penn State in 1995.
