UPLAND, Ind. – The 2nd-seeded Huntington softball team breezed to a 4-0 win over 7th-seeded Mount Vernon Nazarene University (22-28) Thursday afternoon at Taylor’s Gudakunst Field in first round action of the Crossroads League Tournament.

The Foresters are back in action today at 4:00 p.m. Coach Gower and crew will take on the winner of the No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan/No. 6 Taylor game in second round action of the league tourney hosted by Taylor University.

Today’s win marks the fourth time this season Huntington has shutout the Cougars. Ariel Sheets was relentless in the circle, surrendering just two hits for the complete-game victory. She has racked up three wins against MVNU this season and has yet to give up a run to the Cougars.

The Foresters wasted little time taking charge of the contest. After three consecutive singles in HU’s first at bat, Emily O’Leary drilled a shot to deep center to drive in a pair of runs for an early 2-0 lead. Two frames later, Marty Harris tallied an RBI-ground out after back-to-back Cougar errors to extend the lead to 3-0 after three.

The game’s final run came by way of Natalie McGuire’s sacrifice fly in the sixth. When all was said and done, HU (34-15) posted seven hits with O’Leary’s two-run single headlining the offense.

The Huntington University Foresters compete in 17 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 39 NAIA All-America honors and 234 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations. U.S. News & World Report ranks Huntington among the best colleges in the Midwest.
