MARIAN, Ind. - The HU women’s golf team is off to a great start this fall as they got better from one day to the next of the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational to finish tied for 7th out of 12 teams. Playing at Arbor Trace Golf Club, Huntington fired a 344 on Friday and shaved off 15 strokes on Saturday for a 329 to post a 673 for the two-day invite.

This weekend’s outing is the first of the season and first match under head coach Rick Sholund. Sholund, in his third season as coach of the Forester men’s program, just took over the women’s program this fall.

Sophomore Betsy Schroeder paced Sholund’s crew by carding an 18-over-par 162 (84, 78) to claim 18th overall out of a field of 74.  Abby Poole turned in a 167 (88, 79) to finish 32nd.

Alexandria Maris and Leah Thompson shot within two strokes of each other with Maris shooting an 87 and 84 for a 171 (39th place) while Thompson finished with a 173 (85, 88) for 41st place. Megan Higgins registered a 187 (96, 91) for HU and playing as an individual, Alayna Steely added a 205 (105, 100).

Coach Sholund likes what he sees. “The team did an outstanding job of starting the season in the right direction. They showed each other what they are capable of.

“I know they will keep training with a focus on the fundamentals. As they do, scores will continue to drop. It is fun to see the competitive nature that this team has.”

Taylor fired a 603 to top the leaderboard followed by UNOH (616), Indiana Wesleyan (630), Grace (658) IU East (661), Siena Heights (665), HU (673), Spring Arbor (673), Purdue Northwest (712), Rend Lake CC (726), Grace B (762) and Kalamazoo (847).
