SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Huntington men’s soccer team suffered its first league loss, a 2-0 decision, Wednesday night to the top team in the Crossroads League in Spring Arbor University. With this loss, HU drops to 5-3-4 overall, 1-1-2 in conference action, while SAU improves to 11-2 overall, 4-0 in league play.

The Cougars, currently 19th in the country, are getting the job done at both ends of the field and tonight was business as usual for the hosts. They entered the contest ranked 11th in the NAIA in total shutouts with six while also boasting one of the nation’s top scorers in Morris Kamara, sitting 8th nationally in total goals with 13.

While Huntington didn’t allow Kamara to find back netting, Alex Sokalski opened up scoring for SAU with a PK just before halftime and then 15 minutes into the second period, Baba Valdmanis ripped a shot from outside the 18 to account for the final score of the night.

Even though Spring Arbor logged nearly twice as many shots as HU, a 13-7 difference, shots on frame were similar with the Cougars holding a slight 7-6 advantage. Corner kicks favored the hosts as well 5-3.

It wasn’t the result Coach Lawson and crew were hoping for but the skipper remains optimistic about his team’s play. “I can’t help but get excited about this team - our fight and desire allowed us to take away many positives from tonight’s match.

“Spring Arbor is a solid side and makes few mistakes while punishing their opponents who do,” said Lawson. “A couple of lapses did us in tonight but we will be better on Saturday!”

Troy Hester took the loss in frame for the Foresters. He finished with five saves.

Huntington returns to the friendly confines of King Stadium on Saturday to host Mount Vernon at 2:00 p.m.

The Huntington University Foresters compete in 17 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 38 NAIA All-America honors and 274 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington University is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 70 academic concentrations.
