HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The HU women’s soccer team knocked off one of the top teams in the nation Saturday afternoon by handing #RV Mount Vernon Nazarene University a 2-1 loss. The Cougars are currently ranked 28th in the country.

With this W, Huntington (7-6-1) jumps into third place in the league standings with a CL record of 3-2 while MVNU (8-4-1) drops into fifth with a 2-2-1 league record.

Matéa Knispel entered the contest ranked 21st in the NAIA in total goals with 13 and added two more to her total by day’s end. Her first goal came at the 4:09 mark when she rocketed a shot far post from 20 out for a quick 1-0 advantage.

The Cougars answered within 18 minutes to knot things up at 1-1. The stalemate continued well beyond halftime and looked as if things could head to OT but a hard foul on Knispel in the box with seven minutes remaining quickly changed all that. The junior midfielder dusted herself off and calmly drilled the PK for what proved to be the game-winner, her fourth of the year.

Shots were similar with Mount Vernon holding a slight 18-16 advantage. The Cougars tallied nine on frame while their visitors finished with eight.

Paige Coolman picked up the win in goal. The senior keeper posted eight saves.

“Today’s win came at a critical point for us as we looked to get back in the win column,” said Coach Burge. “It certainly wasn’t our cleanest game of the season but the girls battled hard against a very tough Mount Vernon squad.

“We fought for 90 minutes from end to end and showed plenty of grit to get the job done. We look forward to cleaning up a few things before our match on Wednesday.”
