WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The HU volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (-17, -21, -20) Friday night to the Lancers of Grace College to drop to 8-8 overall, 3-3 in league play.

While the Foresters finished within two kills of their hosts, committed two less service errors and matched the Lancers in blocking, GC’s offensive efficiency was the glaring difference between the two teams. Grace committed just 11 attacking errors to post a .229 hitting percentage to HU’s .039.

Offense was by committee for the Foresters. Josie Beaver finished with eight kills while Haley Longley  added seven kills to go along with a team-high .316 hitting percentage. Danielle Gurwell also registered seven kills and Brandy Michie collected six.

“I was really happy with Haley’s focus and aggressiveness tonight,” said Coach Shondell. “She has the pieces to be one of the best right sides in our league and tonight was a great step toward that.”

Defensively, Gurwell posted two blocks. Kate Cobb and Ariene Butler anchored the backcourt with 17 and 13 digs respectively.

“All in all, we’re looking at a long season still ahead of us,” Shondell said. “We can take a few bumps here and there so long as it strengthens us down the road when it matters most.”
