Longaker Recital Presents Top College Talent

HUNTINGTON, IN -- The Department of Music at Huntington College will present the Longaker Recital on November 28 at 8:00 p.m. The performance will feature the College's premier vocalists and instrumentalists. The concert will be held in the Longaker Recital Hall of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.The Longaker Recital is a new addition to the public performances offered by music students at Huntington College.
"An increased number of students and some exceptional talent in this year's senior class have conspired to give us the opportunity to reshape our performance schedule and meet the needs of the broader community," explained Dr. David Wallis , assistant professor of music at Huntington College. "To give greater clarity and breadth to our academic program and to raise the level of performance competition, we completely revamped our honors recital. More difficult material was required and a higher degree of artistry and technical mastery was expected."
The Longaker Recital, named for the benefactor of the Merillat Centre's recital hall, will feature Huntington College's best performers. Wallis notes that if in any semester there are too few students who meet the rigorous standards for the Longaker Recital, the concert will not be scheduled.
Such is not the case this fall, however. Featured performers will include many students familiar to Huntington audiences.
Shanna Averill, a junior theatre major from Adrian, Michigan, will sing "Mon' coer s'ouvre a ta voix" (My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice) from Camille Saint-Saens' Samson and Delila.
Pianist Andy Brandon, a sophomore choral education major from Fremont, Ohio, will perform Fantasie Impromptu, Op. 66, by Frederic Chopin.
Huntington College senior Jennifer Braun, a music performance major from Celina, Ohio, will sing "Je veux vivre dans le reve" (I Want to Live in the Dream) from Romeo and Juliette by Charles Gounod.
French pianist Patrick Fata, another senior majoring in music performance, will perform "Harmonies poetiques et religieuses" from Franz Liszt's Funerailles.
Tenor Jason Holliday will sing "Kriegers Ahnung" (Warrior's Foreboding) from Schwanengesang by Franz Schubert. Holliday is a senior from Northwood, Ohio, majoring in educational ministries.
Pianist April Malson will perform Benjamin Godard's Le Cavalier Fanastique, Op. 42, No. 1. Malson is a senior from Clare, Michigan majoring in social studies education.
Amy McCollum of Bloomington will perform a piano suite by Bela Bartok, Op. 14. She is a junior pursuing a degree in music performance.
Tasha Tolan, a senior from Celina, Ohio, will sing "Dir Rath' Ich Vater" (I Warn You, Father) from Richard Wagner's Die Walkure
Accompaniment will be provided by Jean Flint, Bonnie Stephan, and Evalyn Wohlford.
Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students and seniors. Children under 12 will be admitted free of charge. Tickets will be available at the door, though seating is limited.
