HUNTINGTON, Ind. - HU junior Matheus Louzada’s hat trick propelled the Forester men’s soccer team to a convincing 6-0 season-opening win Wednesday afternoon against first-year program IU East. Louzada slotted one past the keeper than 60 seconds in to establish a lead for his team that would never be challenged.

“Today was a great way to start the season,” said Coach Russ Lawson. “I thought it was a complete team effort and we were committed to playing both sides of the ball. We were able to capitalize on some good pressure that allowed us to counter attack and jump on them early.”

Coach Lawson’s crew scored twice more at the foot of Bradey Gerke and Louzada over the next 25 minutes to extend their lead to 3-0 and then Ty Sproat, shortly after entering the contest, found back netting to send the Foresters into the locker room with a 4-0 halftime lead.

Miguel de Sousa, who assisted Louzada’s first goal, opened up the second half with a quick score less than four minutes in and then found Louzada again seven minutes later to cap off the scoring as the final 35 minutes proved scoreless.

HU posted 22 shots, 12 on goal, while limiting their visitors to just ten. Starting keeper Troy Hester spent 75 minutes in goal during which he posted three saves to pick up the win. Blake Cooke came in on relief to register two saves and preserve the shutout.

“If you look at our attack, we’re picking up where we left off last year and that’s encouraging,” said Lawson. “And our defense has solidified that much more.

“The boys are hungry and they want to do some great things so tonight was step in the right direction.”

The Foresters (1-0) are back in action next Wednesday when they host Indiana Tech at 5:00 p.m.
