One Voice to minister in Central and South America
HUNTINGTON, IN JANUARY 3, 1997--- One Voice, Huntington College's deputized music ministry team, will minister in song throughout Central and South America during January Term. The sextet will perform under the direction of Dr. David Wallis, music department chairman, in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Ecuador.
"We have a unique opportunity this year to not only proclaim the good news of Christ, but also to travel as ambassadors for the College on a mission trip to Central and South America," explained Wallis. "During January Term, we will serve as the music ministry team for the Honduras General Conference of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. We will then continue on to Nicaragua where we will serve in the same capacity for the General Conference of a dozen new churches there."
"Lastly we will travel to Quito, Ecuador where we will work on a missions project in support of HCJB, the world's largest Christian radio station," Wallis continued. "Thus we will be able to use our musical gifts to serve the church, and we can supply labor and materials for a wonderful and worthy organization as well."
Students had to raise nearly $2,000 each to participate in this service-learning opportunity. They follow in a Huntington College tradition of touring deputized teams dating to the 1920's, when a Gospel quartet traveled 8,000 miles in a Model T to proclaim Christ through song.
One Voice performers include:
- Rebekah Armstrong, a sophomore music major from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
- Hersel Cremeans, a sophomore music major from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.
- Marvin McNew, a sophomore music major from Huntington, Indiana.
- Janelle Newhouse, a senior English major from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
- Joy Patterson, a sophomore communications major from Durand, Illinois.
- Michael Thompson, a freshman music major from Huntington, Indiana.
The concert tour is one of many intensive service-learning opportunities available at Huntington College during January Term. Other HC students will visit Indian reservations in the American west, while others will travel to Haiti and Uganda. Additional January Term courses will take students to Hollywood, England, and Italy.
