Professional Programs to offer prior learning experience credits

HUNTINGTON, Ind. Huntington University Professional Programs is offering prior learning assessment to non-traditional students wishing to accelerate the completion of their degrees."We know that often our students come to us with more life experience than academic course completion," said Tonya Horvath, assistant registrar for the program. "We provide the opportunity to use their professional experiences or certifications to earn college credit."
Prior learning assessment (PLA) includes a three-credit elective course and additional credits based on a PLA portfolio produced by the student. The portfolio consists of a resume, autobiography of post-high school experience and a narrative and supporting documentation of the student's previous work experience.
"At the end of the class, students use the portfolio they have created in class to petition to earn an additional three credit hours," Horvath said.
After completing the PLA course, students may create additional portfolios and petition for up to 25 percent of the credits needed for their degree.
This past fall, students received credits in courses such as real estate, introduction to law and operations management.
Horvath completed a series of trainings and workshops and received certification through the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).
Huntington University's adult degree programs are offered in Huntington, Fort Wayne and Columbia City as well as online. Classes are offered in an accelerated seven-week format with classes held one night a week. Learn more at www.HUadultdegrees.com.
