Professor and Student Contribute to New Book

HUNTINGTON, IN -- Dr. Paul E. Michelson, distinguished professor of history at Huntington College, and H.C. student Matt Webb were contributors to the new country study volume on the former Soviet republics of Belarus and Moldova.

The book, "Belarus and Moldova: Country Studies," was edited by Helen Fedor and published by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress [Washington DC: 1995]. The volume is part of the Area Handbook series used by American diplomats.

The book contains a number of photographs by Michelson and Webb, who visited Moldova together in 1993. Dr. Michelson also served as a consulting editor for the book. He provided information for and a critique of the Moldovan portions of the work.

A copy of Belarus and Moldova was recently received by Huntington College's RichLyn Library for its publicly available government documents collection. The book is also available from the Library of Congress.

Once a Soviet republic, Moldova was formerly part of Romania and is a largely Romanian- speaking area. Michelson, an internationally known expert on Romania, visited Moldova several times between 1990 and 1995 to give lectures and participate in conferences. In addition, he has appeared on Moldovan radio and television to discuss Romanian history and has participated in two Voice of America broadcasts to Moldova.

In addition to his service to Huntington College, Michelson is currently a research associate of the Basarabian History Laboratory of the University of Chisinau. He is the author of the article on Moldova in the current edition of the Encyclopedia Americana.

Webb is a junior at Huntington College seeking a degree in theatre. A 1994 graduate of Huntington North High School, he is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Bill Webb of Huntington.
