HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Huntington University head coach Kyle Shondell announced Thursday the hiring of Ivan Matos as an assistant coach to the Forester volleyball program.

“We are ecstatic to be able to add Ivan to the Forester family,” said Shondell. “He is somebody that brings an immense amount of energy and volleyball knowledge to our staff.”

Matos comes to Huntington after spending the 2016 season as the head volleyball coach at DeKalb High School in addition to spending the last few seasons with the Empowered Volleyball Academy in Fort Wayne, Ind.

A native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Matos played four seasons as an outside hitter for Hall of Fame coach, Arnie Ball, at IPFW. In his time with the Mastadons, he earned 1st Team All-MIVA honors, was named AVCA National Player of the Week twice, MIVA Player of the Week twice, and was a MIVA All-Academic Team honoree three times.

“Ivan brings a unique background and a wealth of playing experience to the position. Our team is very excited to learn from and grow under his leadership,” Shondell said.

A coaching career that includes stints at DeKalb High School, Empowered Volleyball Academy, and as a graduate assistant at IPFW has seen Matos oversee every skill and position inside the game of volleyball. His duties at Huntington will largely consist of training outside and opposite attackers among other positions, assisting in film study and game strategy.

“I am really excited to get to work with Forester volleyball,” Matos said. “I really like where the program is headed and can’t wait to be a part of the family.”

Matos holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Policy and a Masters of Science in Public Affairs, both from IPFW. He resides in Fort Wayne, Ind.
