Students to participate in I-69 innovation challenge

Huntington, Ind.-Five students from Huntington University will join other I-69 corridor college students the weekend of Feb. 6-8 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind., to work together to create an innovative solution to a given social problem. The five students from Huntington, junior Danielle Miller, senior Erika Raymond, senior Josh Lawrence, senior Ryan Bonner and senior Spencer Batt, will join students from Anderson University, Ball State University, Indiana Wesleyan University and Taylor University.
"Huntington University is very excited to participate in the I-69 Collegiate Innovation Challenge because it not only allows our students to work with other college students in our area, but it also encourages the students to think like an entrepreneur," said Kay Schwob, director of the Enterprise Resource Center at Huntington University. "Each student brings his/her own strengths and it also allows the students opportunities to network."
Upon arrival to Swan Lake, the students take a problem solving assessment and are divided into teams, one student from each school per team. Working together, they must create a business idea to solve a given social problem about the sustainability in Indiana. On Saturday afternoon, each team presents their solution to a panel of keynote judges from the I-69 corridor and a winning team is selected.
The first I-69 Collegiate Innovation Challenge was held in November of 2006. The purpose of this competition is to encourage entrepreneurship in the area, foster collaborative market solutions through team building, promote cross-pollination, and generate creative ideas.
The sponsors for the event are, each university, Duke Energy, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, Indiana Michigan Power, the Grant County Economic Growth Council, and the Innovative Network.
