Two communication students to present papers in April

Huntington, Ind. "Huntington College's Jennifer Herring, a senior Oral Communication and Educational Ministries double major from Caledonia, Mich., and Lauren Hines, a senior Oral Communication and Psychology double major from Wauconda, Ill., will present refereed papers at the Southern States Communication Association's Annual Convention. The convention will be held April 4-7 in North Carolina. The papers were written as a part of a project for a Nonverbal Communication class, taught by Dr. Mike Rowley. The refereed papers were accepted to be presented at the convention in April.
This is a huge accomplishment for an undergraduate, said Rowley. At this time, Jennifer and Lauren are the only students in the department that will graduate with refereed convention papers.
Herrings paper, A Study on Conjugate Lateral Eye Movements in Relation to Gender, Creation and Recall, seeks to determine the relationship between shifts in gaze, creation, recall and gender. Eighty college students participated in the study by answering two questions in the presence of an interviewer. The first question asked the subjects to project where they would be in five years. The second question asked them to describe their favorite childhood memory.
The study found that the subjects looked predominately to the left, regardless of the nature of the question or the gender of the individual, recalled Herring. The results also supported the hemispherical activation theory, which hypothesizes that gaze will shift to the opposite side of the hemisphere being used. However, the results do not support the idea that left movers tend to be more involved in feelings than right movers. This study sheds light on both of the main branches of CLEM research and also on gender differences.
Hines' paper is titled, A Study on Greeting Behaviors Between Strangers in Relation to Gender, Distance, and Initiation of Interaction.
