Our Mission
The Department of Art & Design is dedicated to producing artists, art educators and designers of unique creative thought and outstanding Christian faith. The programs enable students to develop an understanding and appreciation for the meaning of past and present Art & Designs in society, acquire a broad experience in the creative use of methods and materials, and attain confidence in their ability to integrate their faith, knowledge and creativity.

The Huntington University department of Art & Design recognizes God as our Creator, as revealed in the scriptures. We are created in His image as aesthetic beings, in which God calls us to use our imagination and intellect to His glory.
Creativity is God's gift to humanity. As Christians and artists we glorify and honor God by continually working to further develop our talents, skills and intellect. Our motivation for study and use of our art is based upon a sense of fulfillment and response to God's call, as we strive to reach a high level of professionalism in our approach to the creative process and our work as artists.
As Christians, we have an obligation to apply our talents to define, impact and transform our culture. The study of the discipline of art inspires and guides us as we develop our intuition and aesthetic sensibility, bringing us into a deeper relationship with our Creator. It also teaches us to interpret and respond to the world around us, with both imagination and discernment, realizing the lasting value of the Art & Designs and that it goes beyond mere decorative representation. It can enlighten us emotionally, spiritually and intellectually.

Huntington University Art & Design prepared me for the design field by teaching me how to incorporate the principles and elements of art. Without learning these fundamentals, I wouldn’t be enjoying the job I have today.

Practical learning is built into our curriculum, and state-of-the-art equipment is the standard. With amazing facilities, including a drawing and painting studio, a ceramics studio, a digital studio, a 3D studio, a 2D design studio, and HU’s own art gallery—Robert E. Wilson Art Gallery—your courses will be packed with experiential learning to equip you for your future career.
From exhibitions in the Robert E. Wilson Art Gallery, to entries in various competitions, you can build your artistic portfolio and leave your mark on the art community. HU has had several student winners recognized in regional university art invitationals, local American Advertising Federation Awards, and an annual juried student art exhibit at HU. You will have plenty of opportunities to display your art, if you pursue them.
International art fraternity, Kappa Pi, is based on academic achievement and artistic excellence. The Zeta Alpha Pi chapter was established at HU to recognize and honor Foresters who have excelled in visual arts academically and creatively. Involvement is strongly encouraged, scholarships are available, and a lifelong community is waiting for qualified art students.
