Foresters split pair with Lancers

After dropping the first game to Grace College 11-3, the Forester baseball team mounted a late game comeback in the nightcap to claim the 6-4 win and even up the series.

After spotting the Lancers a run through the first two innings of play, the Foresters recorded two hits and took advantage of two Grace miscues to tie things up in the top of the third. The Lancers responded with a run in the bottom of their frame and two more in the fourth to take the 4-1 lead. The Foresters closed within one, 4-3, to start the fifth but first baseman Brent Easterday made sure the Lancers stayed on top by delivering a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to blow open the game. The Lancers went on to score two more runs in fifth and added two more in the sixth to record the 11-3 win.

Ty Mills took the loss for HU giving up seven runs on eleven hits and one walk. Eric Schultz and Eric Harpring each finished with two hits and an RBI to lead the Foresters at the plate.

In the nightcap, Schultz opened the game with a shot over the center field fence to give HU the early 1-0 lead. Grace hammered out four runs over the next three innings to grab the 4-1 lead but the Foresters went to work in the final two innings to earn the hard fought come-from-behind victory.

Schultz got things started for the Foresters in the top of the sixth when he reached base on a bunt. After three consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly, the Foresters closed to within one, 4-3. HU then took advantage of a misplayed grounder to tie things up at fours.

Schultz again came up big for the Foresters in the seventh when he recorded his second round-tripper of the night with a blast over the right field fence to give HU the 5-4 advantage. Not to be outdone, Andrew Drummond then sent one long to extend the Foresters' lead to 6-4.

The Lancers weren't quite ready to call it quits as they started off their last at-bats with back-to-back singles but closer Brian Kirschbaum had other plans as he stepped in and struck out the next three batters to pick up the save. Frantz, who came in to relieve Xyan Adkisson, recorded the win for HU. In three innings of work he gave up three hits and two walks while striking out two. Schultz paced the Foresters at the plate with two home runs, a single and three RBI.
