Huntington, Ind.— The Huntington College athletics department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of March 1-7, 2004. Softball sophomore Holly Gibson and track and field senior Jonathan Doyle earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week.
Holly Gibson, an elementary education major from Greenfield, Ind. (Cathedral High School), helped lead the Forester softball team to a 1-1 week. Gibson collected six hits and knocked in three runs in Huntington’s doubleheader against Ancilla College. In game one she went 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles and drove in two runs in the Forester’s 6-3 win. In game two, she added three more hits, including two doubles, and picked up her third RBI on the day in Huntington’s 4-2 loss. The Foresters next play host to Manchester College on Tuesday, March 9, at 3:00 p.m.
Jonathan Doyle, an exercise science major from Boardman, Ohio (Boardman High School), had an outstanding individual performance at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., over the weekend. Doyle, who was seeded 25th in the 55-meter high hurdles heading into the national event, earned a spot in the semi-finals by posting the 10th best time of 7.85 in the prelims. He finished 11th in the event with a 7.90 time in the semi-finals. Both times bested his previous career record of 7.96. The Forester track team will open its outdoor season on March 27, at Wheaton College.
The Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past seven years, Huntington has produced 45 NAIA All-American honors and 71 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
