HU falls to Sterling in first round of the NAIA National Tourney

Sterling College (KS) held Huntington University to 34.5 percent shooting from the field to earn the 61-52 victory and knock the Foresters out in the opening round of the 2010 NAIA Division II National Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

Call it a bad case of jitters or just an off day but the Foresters put themselves behind the eight ball as they only managed a handful of points in the first 11 minutes of play to find themselves out of sink and down 16-5. HU went on to outscore the Warriors 13-9 over the next nine of minutes, cutting the deficit to 25-18 by halftime.

It looked like HU was poised to turn things around to start the second half when Sarah Miller's long bomb brought HU within four, 27-23, at the 18:46 mark but the Warriors responded with an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the day at 35-23 just three minutes later. As is characteristic of this feisty Forester squad, they kept within striking distance with their scrappy defense and never-say-die attitude. With just under five minutes left in the contest, HU tied things up at 47 when Jenna Donaldson calmly sank two free throws for the sidelined Courtney Beerbower.

The Warriors then went to work at the free throw line, going a perfect 12-for-12 in the final two minutes of play to pull away from the Foresters and advance to the second round of the national tournament.

Miller notched her first double double of the year with 16 points and ten boards. Beerbower was the only other double-digit scorer for HU with 11. Sterling was led by Britany Gasper's 18 points and ten rebounds.

The Foresters finish the season with a 21-10 record.
