HU singes Maple Leafs

Huntington University (8-8, 3-3) defeated Goshen College 52-37 in Saturday’s women’s college basketball play. In a game characterized by sticky defense, both teams struggled to find the basket. The lead seesawed back and forth for much of the first half with HU taking the lead for good at 14-12 on a jumper by Amy Wanemacher with 5:28 remaining. Shooting just 29% in the first half, HU took a 21-17 point lead into halftime.

Betsey Bean began the scoring for HU in the second half, but the Maple Leafs refused to be blown away. Goshen’s Carly Feldman was fouled on the way to the basket and hit one free throw to tighten the score at 23-18. Following an HU turnover, Kendra Fights scored a lay-up on an offensive put-back to close the gap at 23-20. The Foresters then responded with an 11-1 run to give themselves a 13-point cushion at 34-21 with 11:51 on the clock, but again, Goshen would not go away. The Leafs drew back within seven on three occasions with the last coming on two charity tosses by Fights to make it 42-35 with 4:02 to go. HU then scored 10 straight points while holding Goshen scoreless for the next 3:30 to put the game out of reach.

HU’s Jessica Ramey led all scorers with 14 points and eight assists in the game. Janna Knisely chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds. Goshen’s Kendra Fights paced the Maple Leafs with 13 points and 8 rebounds. In the defensive battle, Huntington shot 35.3% with Goshen shooting 26.2% for the game.
