NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The HU men’s soccer team’s season opener didn’t go as Coach Lawson and his squad had hoped as the Foresters came up blank on the scoreboard to suffer a 2-0 loss at Holy Cross College Wednesday afternoon.
It was a tentative start for both teams as first game jitters characterized the opening minutes of play but the Saints didn’t need too long to warm up, making good in the 26th minute on their fourth and final shot of the period to force their visitors to play catch up the rest of the way.
Huntington didn’t back down as they registered four shots in the final 20 minutes of the half but couldn’t find back netting to take a 1-0 deficit into intermission.
The break proved to benefit the Saints as they stepped up their offensive pressure by generating eight shots to HU’s four. They rounded out the game’s scoring with another goal 20 minutes into the period to take a commanding 2-0 lead that wasn’t challenged the rest of the way.
Isaac Wust, Scott Murray and Brooks Gerke each registered two shots in the contest. James Couchman finished with one save and took the loss in goal.
The Foresters’ home opener is slated for Monday at 2:00 p.m. against Lawrence Tech (Mich.)
