Sparks paces HU to first place finish

BLUFFTON, Ohio – Sophomore Christine Sparks paced the HU women’s cross country team to a first place finish at the Bluffton University 5K Invitational over the weekend. Sparks ran a course record of 19:02.64 to finish first out of 68 runners.

Finishing three spots later in 4th place was Gretchen (Spahr) Pyper who ran a 20:03.53. Hannah Moore clocked in at 20:24.95 to claim 7th while Krista Wood crossed the line just over ten seconds later in 20:35.45 to finish 10th. Rounding out the scoring was Natalie Spahr who posted a time of 21:02.45 to earn 20th place.

Other HU runners included Erin Rockey (26th, 21:42.08) and Marie Ditzler (30th, 22:38.52).

Huntington took the title with 42 points followed by Ohio Northern (47), Heidelberg (48), Bluffton (140) and Lourdes (189).

The Huntington men’s cross country team ran to a third place finish at the invite. Three Foresters finished in the top 20 individually with Austin Presnell pacing the HU pack by crossing the line 11th in 20:09.30. Brian Menzie logged a time of 20:35.00 to claim 15th while Eric Baker ran to an 18th place finish in 20:50.02.

Zach McIntyre came in just over two seconds after Baker to post a time of 20:52.99 for 21st place and rounding out the scoring was Codi Wiersema who registered a 21:27.00 for 26th place.

Other Huntington runners included Josh Graham (33rd, 22:51.00) and Ben Gammon (40th, 26:44.00).

The 6K race showcased 82 runners. Ohio Northern took home top honors with 15 points followed by Heidelberg (69), HU (91), Bluffton (124) and Lourdes (166).
