Strong, Porterfield named Athletes of the Week

Huntington, Ind.— The Huntington University athletic department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of September 12-18, 2005. Tennis freshman Stephanie Strong and men’s golf senior Andrew Porterfield earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.


Stephanie Strong
Stephanie Strong, an elementary education major from Goshen, Ind. (Fairfield High School), went 6-0 in three matches this week to remain unbeaten in her young career. Playing at #1 singles, the freshman defeated Taylor’s Katie Clark 6-3. 6-1, Ohio Northern’s Kaitlyn MacDonald 6-3, 7-6 and Goshen’s Diana Diaz 1-6, 6-1, 7-6. Strong and classmate Kendra Ganz, also kept their #1 doubles’ record unblemished with an 8-6 win over Taylor, an 8-5 victory over Ohio Northern and an 8-4 win at Goshen. Strong is currently 12-0 on the season and will face her toughest challenge to date at home against Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday, September 20 at 3:00 p.m.


Andrew Porterfield
Andrew Porterfield, a computer science major from Marion, Ind. (Eastbrook High School), helped lead the Foresters to their first win this season at the Taylor University Invitational. Porterfield recorded a career low 69 en route to earning medalist honors in the match. The team’s score of 296 was the lowest posted by a Huntington squad in at least 10 years and the win was the program’s first since the early 90’s. The Foresters next travel to Warsaw for the Grace College Invitational on Tuesday, September 20 at 10:00 a.m.

The Huntington University Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past eight years, Huntington has produced 52 NAIA All-America honors and 102 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
