Foresters wrap up spring break by dropping last three out of four

The Foresters baseball team (7-9) lost three of their final four games in Florida as they topped Mount Vernon 5-3 but fell to Indiana Tech 13-3 on Friday. On Saturday they dropped a pair of close ones to Mount Vernon, 9-8 and 8-7.

On Friday against Mount Vernon, HU out-hit the Vikings 9-6 and took advantage of four Cougar errors to claim the 5-3 win. The Foresters put one on the board in the opening inning and followed up with two more in the second to take the 3-0 lead. Mount Vernon picked up runs in bottom of the third and fourth innings to close within one but the Foresters got two back in the fifth and sixth to extend their lead back to three. The Cougars would add another run in the sixth but it wouldn't be enough. Cody Walters picked up the win for HU, working four innings and only giving up two hits. Brian Kirschbaum earned the save by getting HU's final six outs of the contest. Jarod Hammel went 2-for-3 from the plate and Eric Schultz recorded two RBI.

Against Indiana Tech, Adam Christner's triple in the bottom of the first started things off for the Foresters. Two singles and a Warrior throwing error later, HU grabbed the early 2-0 lead. Tech quickly recovered, scoring a run in the second and two more in the third before exploding for ten runs in the final three innings to earn the convincing 13-3 win over the Foresters. Mitch Bowers took the loss for the Foresters allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits and two walks. Travis Frantz finished with two hits and an RBI to lead HU at the plate.

On Saturday, the Foresters dropped back-to-back one-run contests to Mount Vernon to close out their spring break trip. After owning a 5-3 lead for the first three innings of play, the Foresters gave up five runs on five hits and three errors in the top of the fourth to give the Cougars the three-run advantage. Mount Vernon added another run in the six to push their lead to 9-5. HU rallied in the seventh to score three runs but left the tying run on second, ending the Foresters' comeback attempt.

Ty Mills took the loss for the Foresters allowing eight runs, four earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Andrew Drummond finished with two hits and three RBI, including a two-run double in the seventh inning rally, while Eric Schultz and Adam Christner each had three hits.

The Foresters' final game of the week was a seesaw affair. The Cougars led 2-0 after two innings but the Foresters scored three times in the top of the third to jump in front 3-2. Mount Vernon responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a 5-3 advantage. After HU tied things up in the fourth, the Cougars added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and then denied the Foresters' rally in the seventh to end the game. Blake Turner, Andrew Drummond, Jamon Hammel and Christner each had two hits in the contest.

The Foresters open up conference play at home against Marian University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
