Indianapolis, Ind. - The first snow the season didn’t stop the MCC match-up Tuesday evening in which the visiting Foresters grabbed a 64-56 win over the Knights of Marian University (5-2, 0-2).
It was a low scoring affair in which points didn’t come easy for either team. The Foresters shot 41.7% for the game while holding the Knights to 37.1%. The difference in the game came by way of the free throw line where the Foresters scored 22 points compared to the Knights’ 5.
HU’s big men accounted for all but 18 of the Foresters’ 64 points. Leading the way was Shane Merryman with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Caleb Kennedy and Alec Peterson netted 16 and 13 points respectively.
After taking a 29-28 advantage into halftime, the Foresters held onto the lead through the first 12 minutes of the second stanza but Marian scored five consecutive points to grab a slim 49-46 lead by the 7:05 mark.
Down by one with three and a half minutes remaining, HU clamped down defensively to hold the Knights scoreless the rest of the way. On the other end of the floor, Peterson took control in the paint to score six of the Foresters’ next eight points to turn their one-point deficit into the six-point advantage with less than 60 ticks on the clock. Two more free tosses in the final 30 seconds gave HU their largest lead of the night and their first MCC win of the year.
Aaron Evans paced the Knights with 15 points. Alex Sylvester tossed in another 13 while Matt Dickerson added ten to round out Marian’s double digit scoring. Jake Stafford grabbed a team-high five boards.
With this win, HU improves to 8-2 on the year, 1-1 in league play. The Foresters take the court again on Saturday when they host 4th-ranked Grace College at 3:00 p.m.
