HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Behind the sharp shooting of Nick Teeter, the HU men’s basketball team scorched the nets for 72.0 percent (18-for-25) in the first twenty minutes to breeze past the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene University 90-67 Saturday afternoon in MCC action.
Enjoying the friendly confines of the Merillat Complex, the Foresters put on a first half shooting clinic by going 9-for-10 from behind the arc to run away with the game before the Cougars knew what hit them. Ryan Boester was the first to show his range by knocking down two treys within the first seven minutes to give HU an early 16-6 lead. Tyler Ault then took over the spotlight by draining back-to-back threes to push the lead to 27-14 by the midway point of the half. It was the Teeter show after that as he blistered the nets by going 5-for-5 behind the arc over the final nine minutes to blow the game open at 50-22 by intermission.
The Foresters went on grow their lead to 58-25 with 16 minutes remaining in the contest. The Cougars slowly chipped away at the lead to outscore HU by ten the rest of the way but it was too little too late as the Foresters (15-11) notched their seventh MCC win to even up their league record at 7-7.
For the game, HU shot 55.1 percent from the field (27-for-49) which included going 12-for-17 from 3-point land for 70.6 percent. They got to the line 32 times and made good on 24 for 75.0 percent.
Caleb Kennedy took game-high honors by scoring 24 points and ripping down nine rebounds. Teeter and Boester rounded out HU’s double digit scoring with 17 and 16 points respectively. Robbie Taylor dropped in 20 points to lead the Cougars. Danil Zakhlebnyy came off the bench to add 15 points and Austin Semple and Ben Severns tossed in 12 apiece.
HU is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Bethel College for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
