Fort Wayne, Ind. - In a battle for the final spot in the conference tournament, it was the University of Saint Francis who came away with the 3-1 win over the Forester men’s soccer team to advance to postseason play.
Plenty of heart and soul but missed opportunities defined HU’s match against the Cougars on Saturday. Despite the Foresters outshooting Saint Francis 10-6 in the first 45 minutes of play, the Cougars came up with the half’s only score in the 41st minute to take the halftime lead.
Missed opportunities continued to haunt HU as the Foresters came up empty on a penalty kick eight minutes into the second stanza. But Huntington continued to battle and finally found netting at the 74:18 mark when Todd Canal served the ball into Jake Essig who bent one around the keeper for a clinical finish to knot the score at 1-1.
The Cougars wasted no time reclaiming the lead three minutes later and then added some padding in the final minute of play to snag the 3-1 win and extend their season.
Drew Mattingly went the distance in goal and finished with four saves.
“I’m proud of our guys’ effort and attitude today,” commented Coach Lawson. “Offensively, I thought this was one of our best efforts of the season. We had seven different players take shots. We fought and threw everything at them but unfortunately didn’t finish our chances.”
With this loss, Huntington wraps up its 2011 season with an overall record of 4-12-1.
