SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - It was a tale of two halves as the Forester men’s soccer team found themselves down 2-0 at break but battled back to pull within one before running out of time, dropping a 2-1 decision to Spring Arbor University Tuesday night.
It looked like the Cougars, who received votes in the latest NAIA poll, might run away with the match as they scored twice within a five-minute span, less than 30 minutes into the contest, but they weren’t able to get too comfortable as the Foresters stormed back in the second half.
After being outshot 13-1 in the first 45 minutes, Huntington matched the Cougars physicality and intensity in the second period to own a 9-7 edge in shots. Their efforts paid off in the 72nd minute when Horraine Lewis headed one in far post off a corner kick from Yordan Rivera to close the gap 2-1. Huntington continued to apply pressure but they would get no closer as the Cougars were able to hold off their visitors for the win.
Coach Lawson is excited about his team’s second half performance. “Tonight we showed that we have the will and ability to compete with just about anybody. Based on how well we played in the second half, we’re definitely taking momentum into Saturday’s match against Saint Francis.”
And the Foresters (7-8-2, 2-6) will need that momentum to translate into results as they battle for a spot in postseason play with only one regular season match remaining.
One point ahead of 9th-seeded Goshen, the Foresters have a chance to dictate their own destiny. A win over USF would punch HU’s ticket to the conference tournament as the eighth seed.
