Huntington, Ind. - In a showdown between the top two teams in the MCC, 19th-ranked Bethel College grabbed the 5-0 win in game one before the Foresters (15-1, 5-1) bounced back to claim the 1-0 victory in the nightcap.
It was a rough start for the Foresters as they uncharacteristically committed four errors and managed only two hits in game one. The Pilots took full advantage of HU's off night as they scored three runs on two hits and two Forester errors in their first at-bats to take a lead that would never be challenged. They added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to wrap up the game and hand HU their first loss of the season.
Aubrey Garner and Taylor Amber were the lone Foresters to pick up a hit. Molly Long took the loss for HU giving up four runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out five in 4.2 innings of work. Abby Dilling tossed the final 1.1 innings and surrendered one run on two hits.
Long again took the mound in game two and went head-to-head with Katie Boocher. It was a match-up that didn't disappoint as each pitcher gave up only five hits. After a scoreless five innings, Allison Greene drew Boocher's only walk of the day to open up the sixth and Brandi Gower's single followed by a Pilot error loaded the bases with no outs. With the momentum clearly favoring the Foresters, the tides quickly turned as Greene was forced out on a fielder's choice and Gower was thrown out stretching to leave HU's only base runner on second with two outs. But Katie Bowers showed why she's leading the nation in hitting (.558) as she stepped up to the plate and came up with a clutch RBI-single to give HU the 1-0 advantage that proved to be the game-winner.
Long recorded the complete-game shutout to notch her eighth win of the season. HU's five hits came from Bowers, Melissa Werling, Lindsay Shellabarger, Greene and Gower.
The Foresters are back in action on Thursday when they host Goshen College.
