LIVONIA, Mich. - The HU softball team went head-to-head against Madonna University in nonconference action Saturday afternoon and left University Field silenced as the Crusaders kept the Foresters off the scoreboard all day, 9-0, 3-0.
Madonna took control of game one by taking advantage of a key two-out error that cleared the bases on their way to a seven run second inning to blow the game wide open.
They went on to plate a run in each of the next two innings to bring their run total to nine and wrap up the win in five innings.
Molly Long took the hit on the mound by giving up seven runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out two over two innings.
The Foresters managed only four hits in the opener with Brandi Gower leading the way with a double.
Despite being outhit by HU 5-4 in the nightcap, the Crusaders were able to piece together three hits in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. They tacked on an insurance run in the fourth to make it 3-0 and complete the sweep.
It was a tough day for Long as she was tagged with her second loss of the day. She gave up four hits, three runs and one walk while striking out five in six innings of work.
Five Foresters posted hits in the losing effort. With these losses, HU drops to 17-9.
