Defense leads to HU demise

A lackluster defensive effort led to the Foresters’ demise as they fell 75-57 to Taylor University.

The first 17 minutes of the contest went back and forth with both teams trying to gain some momentum. During that stretch, the score was tied three times and the lead changed hands ten times, but it was Taylor that made its move first. The Trojans went on a 7-1 run in the final three minutes to take a 39-33 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Taylor seemed to pick up where it left off as the second half began and quickly had HU down ten. The Foresters cut into the margin, narrowing the gap to 48-40 with 13:32 remaining, but the Trojans put together eight unanswered points to expand their margin to 16 points and HU never was able to mount a significant threat the remainder of the game.

Taylor’s Alison Heesch was nearly unstoppable in the paint as she took HU for 27 points and 13 rebounds. Bethany Ballard added 15 and Paige Rudolph finished with 11 for the Trojans. Courtney Beerbower led three Foresters in double figures with 21 points. Brittney Bateman added 13 and Jenna Donaldson finished with 10.

Taylor hit 51% from the field, including 6 for 11 from 3-point range while holding HU to 36% shooting for the game. The Trojans also held a dominant advantage under the glass with a 41-26 margin in rebounds.

The loss drops the women to 9-7 on the season and 1-3 in the MCC.
