Foresters beat RedStorm over Thanksgiving break

Behind Sarah Miller's 27 points and three assists, the Forester women's basketball team (7-1) capped off Thanksgiving break with an 81-70 win over the University of Rio Grande (6-2).

After the RedStorm jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, Miller scored the next five points to give HU their first lead at the 17:09 mark. Rio Grande tied things up 90 seconds later but Allison Greene drained a three to give Huntington the go ahead lead at 10-7. A RedStorm squad used to scoring the bulk of their points in transition were a bit stymied by the Foresters' hard-nosed defense as they limited Rio Grande to 11 points over the next ten minutes. HU enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 35-18 with just under five minutes left in the half and Kelsey Green's rebound bucket at the halftime buzzer gave HU the 40-27 lead.

Green picked up where she left off by scoring the first bucket of the second period. Miller and Lauren Meese took over from there by accounting for all but two of the Foresters' points over the next ten minutes to extend the lead to 58-45 at the 9:03 mark. The RedStorm chipped away at the lead and finally cut it to single digits, 64-55, with just over six minutes on the clock. The Foresters built it back to twelve at the 5:06 mark but a scrappy Rio Grande stuck around and by the 1:31 mark had trimmed the lead to seven at 73-66. Greene's long bomb on the next possession was the final dagger as the Foresters went 5-for-7 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.

In addition to Miller's 27 points, Green finished with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the double double. Meese and Taylor Foley added 11 and ten points respectively. Jenna Smith and Kaylee Helton dropped in 14 points each for the RedStorm. Also scoring in double digits was Brooke Shaw with 13 and Bre Davis with 11.

HU shot 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the field. The Foresters held a slight edge in rebounds at 37-36 and committed 15 turnovers to Rio Grande's 21.
