After 110 minutes of soccer, the HU women’s soccer
team had to settle for a 2-2 draw against the visiting Lancers of Grace College on Saturday afternoon.
Grace struck first with a goal in the closing minutes of the first half to take a 1-0 lead at intermission. Claire Creasy tied things up in the 55th minute with a beautiful shot to the far low post but an HU foul in the box just 13 minutes later gave the Lancers an easy score and the 2-1 advantage. The Foresters’ equalizer came at the foot of Sam Cubic as she blasted one from 30 yards at the 79:24 mark to send the game to overtime. Despite outshooting Grace 7-1 in the extra twenty minutes, the Foresters couldn’t make good on any of their opportunities as the game finished in a deadlock.
"This was a bittersweet game for us. We came out as the aggressors and really made it the type of game we wanted to play,” commented Coach Burgher. “We left this game thinking we should be 2-0 in conference instead we are 1-0-1.
"Our whole team was frustrated that we outshot them 26-8 and walked away with the tie. Whenever you have over triple the amount of chances of your competition you really hope to come away with a win. We are making great strides as a program and we know what we need to continue to work on to get where we want to be."
