Brown awarded Impact Initiative Scholarship

Huntington, Ind.—Huntington University sophomore Katie Jo Brown was awarded the 2006 Student Senate Impact Initiative Scholarship at the University’s annual Forester Night. Student Body President Ryan Darr announced the award at the Forester Night festivities, the first time the winner of the scholarship was announced live to the student body.

“It was such a surprise,” said Brown, an elementary education major from Eaton Rapids, Mich. “I didn’t expect to get it. I feel so blessed to receive this scholarship!”

The $1,000 scholarship is given to a sophomore for use during their junior year and renewable for their senior year. Selection is based on financial need, current and planned involvements both on an off campus, and a minimum grade point average of 2.7.

Brown is involved is Alpha Gamma Pi and Kappa Delta Pi. She is a buddy at the Huntington Kid’s Club where she helps plan lessons and leads a small group of seventh grade girls. Brown also helps with the children’s ministry and is on a leadership team for Emmaus, a young adult ministry at Life Community Church in Huntington, Ind.

The Student Senate Impact Initiative Scholarship was first awarded in 2004 when Student Senate wanted to use extra money left after student activities to benefit another student. In order to raise the $10,000 required for an endowed scholarship, Student Senate members in the fall of 2003 called Huntington University Student Senate alumni in a phone-a-thon and raised more than $12,000 to be matched.
