1, 2, 3... go!

Huntington University’s mission is to honor Christ in scholarship and service. If you earn your bachelor’s degree in social work, you will be completing that mission by advocating for hurting people with compassion and love. Here are the top ten reasons why you should earn your Bachelor of Social Work degree at HU:

1. Over 500 hours of hands-on, real-life experiences through experiential learning

If you major in social work, you will have the opportunity to participate in two practicums, an internship, and a senior practicum. Each of these learning opportunities will give you practical experience to prepare you for your career.

2. Courses on diverse topics like human behavior, addictions, minority groups, poverty, and social policy

HU equips all of its students for success by creating a rigorous academic setting in the classroom, which is useful for social work majors because you will need to be well versed in multiple areas. For more information on the interesting foundational classes you would take at HU, check out a list of the social work courses

3. Discussions on faith-integration in practice

Micah 6:8 states, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Within HU’s social work program, you will be able to see others through the lens of Christ, which will help you to serve them with the best support to meet their needs.

4. Supportive professors

The professors within the social work program each have impressive experience within their own careers that they will share with you to prepare you for your career in the most beneficial way. Meet the faculty to learn more about their involvements and certifications.

5. Small class sizes

The class sizes are smaller at HU for social work. This opportunity allows you to create close bonds with your classmates and have a closer relationship with your professors.

6. Discussion-based classes

Since the classes are smaller, you will have the chance to discuss issues with your classmates. Everyone will be heard, and this experience will allow you to have a broader understanding of social work and faith topics.

7. Networking with social workers through attendance at conferences and career fairs

Through these valuable experiences, you will be able to learn more from experienced professionals in your field and create networking connection opportunities for yourself that will help you succeed in your career.

8. Opportunities for service and intercultural experiences in places such as Thailand, Jamaica, and Chicago

Again, HU provides the best opportunities to prepare you for a career in social work. Through these experiences, you will be able to gain more insight and perspective into the topics you have discussed in class.

9. Lasting friendships

Social work senior Maddy Robrock says, “HU’s social work program is special to me because of how close knit we are. Many of our classes are smaller in size, which gives us the opportunity to be more intentional with conversations and get to know each other on a deeper level.”

10. Numerous clubs and activities to get to know the campus and Huntington community

Students in the social work program have completed internship and practicum hours in several businesses and nonprofits for the Huntington community and beyond. For a complete list of the numerous areas where students have completed their field experience and where you could potentially intern, check out the Social Work Program Overview

There are infinite reasons why you should pursue your bachelor’s degree in social work at HU. If this list of the top ten reasons ignited a passion within you to advocate for others, social work may be the career path God has for you!
