FOR RELEASE: Monday, April 3, 2000
Huntington, Ind. " The Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society at Huntington College was recently named the winner of the President's Cup. The award recognizes Huntington College's chapter as the most outstanding of Alpha Chi's 300 chapters nationally. The President's Cup is awarded every second year. The Huntington College chapter was cited for its Alpha Chi Forum series, which includes movie discussion programs, dinner conversations with professors and visiting lecturers, and practical topics such as preparation for graduate school. Indiana Beta Chapter members are also regular participants in community service activities, especially through Huntington College's Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service, and have received many past national honors through Alpha Chi for their academic achievements.
Two Huntington College students, Amy Smith and Sharra Sieminski, attended this year's National Convention of Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society in Savannah, Georgia. Ms. Smith won the Region V Alpha Chi graduate fellowship, while Ms. Sieminski was first runner up for the undergraduate regional award. Also attending the Savannah meeting were chapter sponsor Dr Paul Michelson, Department of History, and assistant sponsor Mrs. Jean Michelson, of the RichLyn Library
The Huntington College chapter is one of only eight to be named a Star Chapter all six years the award has been in existence. In recognition of the chapter's longtime commitment to excellence, Dr. Michelson, college sponsor of Alpha Chi since 1975, was one of 16 Alpha Chi sponsors presented with the first Distinguished Service Award at this year's national convention.
Alpha Chi is an academic honor society that admits students from all disciplines. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution's juniors and seniors. Invitation to membership comes only through an institutional chapter at regionally accredited colleges and universities. Alpha Chi involves student members in many activities including chapter officer leadership, student representation on the National Council, local chapter event planning, and presenting scholarly papers at regional and national conventions.
